Understanding and treating nocturnal enuresis in children and pre-adolescents: causes, consequences and solutions

Bedwetting, also known as enuresis or nocturnal enuresis, is a common phenomenon among children and pre-teens. Although it often causes stress, anxiety, fatigue, and expense for families, there are now many solutions to cure bedwetting permanently.

What's enuresis ?

Bedwetting is defined as involuntary urination during sleep in a child aged 5, 6 years or older. It can be :

A primary enuresis : The child has never been toilet trained at night. This may be a few drops of urine or more abundant urination, and not necessarily regularly every night.

Secondary enuresis : the child has been toilet trained at night for at least 6 months, then starts wetting the bed again during sleep.

What causes bedwetting? Why does my older child always soil his sheets at night?

Causes of bedwetting or nocturnal enuresis are varied, and moreover, often combined :

- Genetic factors: 75% of children who bedwet have a parent who has experienced the same urinary disorder.

- Late bladder maturity: Some children's bladders cannot yet store enough urine throughout the night and the bladder must be relieved during sleep.

- Too deep sleep: Some children do not wake up despite the signals of a full bladder and wet their sheets.

- Excessive urine production at night : due to low secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH).

- Psychological factors: intense stress, divorce, death, change of school or lifestyle, school problems, etc. can trigger secondary nocturnal enuresis in a child who was otherwise toilet trained during sleep.

- Chronic constipation: This can put pressure on the bladder, which can only hold a limited amount of urine.

- Obesity: This is statistically linked to a greater risk of developing bedwetting.

Some statistics on bedwetting disorders :

Bedwetting affects approximately 15% of 5-year-old children.

Bedwetting naturally decreases with age: 5 to 10% at age 7, 2 to 3% at age 10, and less than 1% in adolescence.

Boys are more affected than girls (only 15% of them are affected by this enuretic disorder).

Primary enuresis accounts for approximately 85% of cases, compared to 15% for cases of recurrence of bedwetting (secondary enuresis).

Obesity is an aggravating factor in the risk of enuretic disorders.

The risk of bedwetting is 2 to 3 times higher for children who have a parent who had the disorder as a child, while the rate rises to 75% when both parents wet the bed while sleeping when they were younger.

You are not alone! In France, it is estimated that 500,000 children between the ages of 5 and 15 are affected by nighttime peeing.

Statistics on bedwetting vary slightly from one source to another, from one country to another, including in Europe, depending in particular on the level of access to care, medical care, but also lifestyle and cultural habits.

What are the consequences of bedwetting and what are the possible risks if it is not treated and persists?

Even if it is medically benign, nocturnal enuresis can have significant emotional and social consequences for the child, teenager or future adult, as well as for their family. Indeed, loss of self-confidence, feelings of shame, social isolation (the young person avoids sleepovers, camps, sleepovers with friends, etc.), family tensions (stress, fatigue, anxiety about getting up or waking up, etc.) are classic problems when a child is faced with this ordeal. Rarer, although possible, consequences such as harassment (teasing, etc.) and academic failure can lead to difficulties that we know are much more complex, sometimes combined with the power of social networks that are taking an increasingly large place in the lives of our little ones.

The financial consequences should not be underestimated, far from it, especially for a modest family (absorbent changes or diapers, treatments, accessories and bedding protection, consultations, laundry, etc.), it is an average cost of €400/year on average for a family!

How to treat bedwetting: what are the solutions?

As we have seen, naturally, bedwetting disorders can resolve themselves, this is the case for a large majority of our young people, but when? Fortunately, several solutions exist to help cure bedwetting that sets in and persists beyond the average statistics, depending on the causes, the type of bedwetting, and the age of the child. Aside from the drug treatment prescribed as a last resort (the most common is desmopressin, which reduces urine production at night), it is recommended :

Behavioral therapies : The goal is to involve the child in monitoring their bedwetting (diary, praise, managing drinks, etc.). Positive parenting is essential to restore confidence.

Lifestyle adjustments : A few simple, common-sense measures can help treat bedwetting, such as cutting down on evening drinks, going to the bathroom just before bed, promoting calm and restful sleep, and avoiding stimulant drinks (colas, etc.) before bed.

The bedwetting stop, alarm or pee-stop :

And that's where the innovative and effective solution, Sleepee by team, comes into play: underwear like any other, incorporating a unique connected technical textile

A bedwetting stop, or bedwetting alarm : We actively participated to a underwear, manufactured in Europe, incorporating our connected technical textile (manufactured in France in Tourcoing, at IMATTEC) that will detect the presence of urine and wake the child. This "Pee Stop", "urine alarm", "pee stop alarm" or "bedwetting alarm" process has long been proven, and there are numerous international scientific publications on this subject. What's new under the sun? You might ask. There is a big difference between our "anti-bedwetting" Sleepee by Tim solution developed and other pee-stops on the market :

SLEEPEE by tim is :

- The most discreet pee-proof underwear: it looks just like any other briefs or boxer shorts.

- The urine detection system is fully integrated into the underwear fabric and is completely invisible from the outside, and virtually undetectable to the touch on the inside. No need for pajamas to hide it (which also need to be washed in case of urine leakage during sleep).

- No radiation to the child's genitals: as parents, we strongly advise against Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connected products, as their effects are unknown at these ages, and sometimes, depending on where they are purchased, they don't even meet European standards.

- No wires or connectors connected to any box placed on the nightstand: comfort and effectiveness with complete discretion guaranteed. No disconnection possible with movements during sleep. One disconnection = one more night for nothing... and a risk of child disengagement.

- Separate brief and boxer brief styles for girls and boys, plus tailored sizes for greater effectiveness.

- Machine washable: for continuous care of your child and easy use for parents. It even passes the ultra-rigorous hand-spinning tests for underwear! If the machine wash takes too long...

- Eco-designed: an electronic box that is returned and reconditioned. Panties and boxers that can be used after treatment like any other underwear, comfortable, high-quality, and environmentally friendly materials: it's always better ;)

- A fun, playful, and intuitive design developed by our partners Tim, Bluegriot, and Bamboo Belgium that makes treatment more enjoyable ;) and takes the drama out of treatment.

- European manufacturing (France, Belgium, Portugal) of the panties or boxers, French design, and smart French textiles (made in Tourcoing).

- Efficient and, above all, rapid detection made possible by connected textiles, which changes everything.

- Simple and completely independent use for the child: parents are more relaxed and can... sleep!

- The formula offered by SLEEPEE by Tim isn't just a pee-stop, but a whole program that includes a game designed with pediatricians and support from childcare professionals who will help you.

- Treatment program is possible from ages 5-6 to 10-12

It's simple: All of this combined is, to this day, totally and simply unique!
